Some remember their ancestors telling of meeting for worship in an old building at Keowee, left by the old Airline Railway Company. They later moved their place of worship to an old building located near the Stevens homeplace. The cemetery was already being used as a community burial ground. As time passed, this same church group decided to move their place of worship to a brush arbor located where the present building now stands. On June 7, 1884, a group met for the purpose of organizing a Baptist church for the people of the local community. Among those instrumental in making this a reality were Reverend H.N. Hayes, H.T. Dodd, Reverend J.H. Stone, Reverend D.L. Hatcher, Jeptho Head, and W.J. Dodd. The name Corinth Baptist Church could have been chosen at this time. It is not clear what the earlier groups called their meeting place. It is possible they were known by Corinth before the formal organization in 1884. Some think the community was "Keowee" before and then took the name Corinth. In 1885, Reverend Hamilton Hayes, the first pastor, split boards along with others to erect the first church building. This church had 13 charter members. From a brush arbor to a modern building valued in excess of $400,000, from 13 members to over 500, from a budget of $200 (flour and lard) to over $200,000 a year, the residents of Corinth continued to stress the importance of worship in our community.
